What is alternative medicine

  1. Looking for an " ALTERNATIVE " to treat your ailments from the regular conventional ways or in addition to, but perhaps are not sure what alternatives you have?

First let's start with describing some terminology.

    Conventional medicine is

Conventional medicine is a system in which medical doctors and other healthcare professionals (such as nurses, pharmacists, and therapists) treat symptoms and diseases using drugs, radiation, or surgery. Also called allopathic medicine, biomedicine, mainstream medicine, orthodox medicine, and Western medicine.

    Alternative medicine is

Alternative medicine is a variety of therapeutic or preventive health-care practices that are not typically taught or practiced in traditional medical communities and offer treatments that differ from standard medical practice. Homeopathy, herbal medicine, and acupuncture are types of alternative medicine.

    Complimentary medicine is

Complimentary medicine, a group of diagnostic and therapeutic disciplines that are used together with conventional medicine. An example of a complementary therapy is using acupuncture in addition to usual care to help lessen a patient's discomfort following surgery.

Now that we have more of an understanding as to what these above terms mean. I want to continue on with this blog giving you some of the Alternative choices that are greatly available to you outside of the regular trip to the pharmacist.

Holistic health is all about the Alternative-treating the body as a whole ( mind, body & spirit ) Not only with nutrition but with these mentioned below.

    Nutrition
    Herbalism
    Aromatherapy
    Acupressure
    Yoga
    Meditation
    Chiropractic
    Reiki
    Supplements
    Massage
    Homeopathy
    Naturopathy
    Reflexology

I'm positive you have heard of most of these if not all. Choosing treatment as these will decrease  the amount of medications you just automatically took to help treat your ailment. Prevent, treat & cure the natural way with these Alternatives.
** make sure you do talk to your health practitioner before you seek some of these Alternatives just in case it conflicts with any procedures or medication you might be taking.

The best treatment for disease is right in your own hands and it isn't anything new or that you haven't heard before. FOOD. Yes we all know our health starts with the foods we eat. Eating the proper foods for proper nutrition is key in helping prevent disease. Not only that, eating properly can decreases every day aches & pains associated with poor nutrition that we assume we need a pill to treat it with. Nothing is fool proof but giving yourself the best chance for good health is something we all deserve. Start with eating healthier, then choosing an Alternative practice and last resort-medication.

You can check out some of my other blogs under the "Nutrition" heading to read more on holistic nutrition, eating healthier & essential nutrients to help you on a new path to great health.

**Please see below these great websites explaining more on this topic of Alternative, complimentary & conventional medicine.
May you choose the best health Alternative for you and may you be Nutritionally Well.
*** the purpose of this blog is to bring awareness to other choices outside of mainstream medicine with a holistic approach. Not to give any medical advice.***

Far infrared sauna detox

When we first heard about far-infrared sauna's, I thought immediately of our microwave. I wasn't going to cook myself from the inside out. I could not understand how I was going to acheive any health benefits from that. How was it safe? But when I joined a wellness centre they had one and convinced me to try theirs. After realizing how wonderful I felt, I couldn't stop using it.
My husband got a little grossed out thinking about everybody sweating in the same sauna over and over again and all the germs & bacteria that came with it. Even though they were cleaned, but really, do we all clean the same way, hmmmm? Plus we hadn't done any research on the safety part of them at this point. But all I knew is that if we figured out they were safe, we were buying one.
My husband did all the research to see really what the health benefits were and the safety of them.
He spend a long time researching and came to the conclusion that if the far infrared had a low EMF, then it would be safe. Plus having our own would keep me out of the wellness centre one that gave him the heebie jeebies :)

How the far infrared saunas work

A far-infrared sauna is a type of sauna that uses light to create heat. "Far" describes where the infrared waves fall on the light spectrum. A traditional sauna uses heat to warm the air, which in turns warms your body. An infrared sauna heats your body directly without warming the air around you.

Far infrared waves penetrate deep into our body for a deep heating action which allows for the body to activate the sweat glands. The sweat glands offer one of only a few mechanisms that the body has to eliminate toxins and since the skin is the largest organ in the human body it is a very good means for elimination.

The sun is the primary source of radiant energy, but not all of this energy is beneficial. Although life needs energy from the sun, too much sunlight damages the skin. Far infrared heat provides all the healthy benefits of natural sunlight without any of the dangerous effects of solar radiation.

Another thing about the saunas is that they come in all shapes and sizes with some having light therapy, radios & CD players to make the experience that much more enjoyable & relaxing.

Benefits of an infared sauna.

It makes you sweat which releases toxins aiding in cleansing & detoxifying the body.
It raises your metabolism to help in weight loss.
Helps with chronic fatigue syndrome.
Helps with anti aging & skin purification.
Helps with relaxation.
Helps relieve joint & muscle pain.
Helps with relieving your sinuses from a cold.
Helps to relieve a hang over.
Helps you feel better.
Helps you sleep better.

You can lose quite a bit of calories, however it's mostly water loss. It's very important to drink water before during after. I realized the less water I had in me that it took longer to get a good sweat going.
Being well hydrated is very important. The length of time in one is completely up to each person. We stay in for 1 hour approx 2 times a week. If you get a chance give one a try to see how it makes you feel.
